Not In My Walking Distance. A residents' movement, Ko Lanta.

Bonnie's has to move.

Protesters with cardboard signs outside Bonnie's, every one of them holding a sandwich or a glass of wine
Day 1. Turnout was strong. So were sales.

Ko Lanta has one road. Bonnie's opened on it, with the wine fridge facing the door. We tried walking past. We tried the long way. There is no long way. It's ruining the economy. Ours, specifically.

Scenes from the front line

A bedsheet banner reading Bonnie's must move hung across the front of Bonnie's Deli, with protesters eating in the chairs below
Day 0. The banner went up at 09:58. The committee went in at 10:00.
Tents and camping chairs pitched at the deli door at dawn, with a charcuterie board on a folding table
Day 4. Some protesters have stopped going home. They say it's to keep up the pressure.
A sunburnt man in socks and sandals holding a sandwich and a sign reading Lagom is dead, Bonnie's killed it
Protester, 54. On his third sandwich since 10:00.
A street dog sitting outside the closed deli next to a small sign reading Monday is not enough
Monday. The only protester who showed up.
A scooter rider with a sign taped on the back reading Honk if you spent your rent on charcuterie
Mobile unit. Nobody has honked. Everyone has nodded.
Protesters in ponchos under a blue tarp in monsoon rain, one shielding his sandwich
Day 9. Monsoon. Nobody left the queue.
The chalkboards outside Bonnie's rewritten to read Protest today 10:00, snacks inside, and Cold wine and beers, protesters welcome
Day 11. Someone got to the chalkboards. Bonnie's denies everything and is serving snacks.

Went in for bread

Tourist, week 3

“I went in for a loaf of bread. A loaf of bread! I came out with the brie, a bag of the cured meats, the charcuterie, I can never say it, two bottles of wine and a jar of something Swedish. They had bread. I forgot the bread.”

Good evening. We begin tonight on Ko Lanta, where an outbreak of convenience has gripped the island.

Health officials have confirmed the source: a grilled cheese sandwich.

Authorities urge calm, and a bag for later.

The only relief comes on Mondays. And it is not enough.

This is FNN.

Ko Lanta economy collapses six days a week, recovers on Mondays

KO LANTA, Thailand (AP) - Household savings on Ko Lanta fell for the sixth day running on Sunday, then rebounded sharply on Monday, repeating a pattern economists say they have watched since 2023 without being able to explain.

The swings track the opening hours of a single delicatessen on the main road at Long Beach. When it is open, 10:00 to 19:00, residents spend. On Mondays, when it is closed, bank balances stabilise and several people report remembering why they came to the island.

Not In My Walking Distance

Residents' Committee, Long Beach, Ko Lanta

Ko Lanta, Tuesday, 10:01

Frida and MartinBonnie's DeliMain road, Long BeachBY HAND (we were in anyway)

Re: Your continued existence within walking distance

Dear Frida and Martin,

We write on behalf of the residents of the zone. We want to be clear that this is nothing personal. You have both been very kind to us, which is part of the problem. We therefore demand the following, effective immediately:

  1. 1.Move at least 2 km away. Up a hill, ideally. Lanta has hills. We checked.
  2. 2.Warm up the wine fridge. Cold wine on a 33-degree island, a few sandy steps from the beach, is entrapment.
  3. 3.Stop delivering. Klong Kong to Saladan. You took away our last line of defence: distance.
  4. 4.Stop remembering our orders. Being greeted by name and handed "the usual" is manipulation, and it works.
  5. 5.Stop being nice about it. We came in to complain and left with a recommendation.
  6. 6.Stop getting new things in. Every week there is a new cheese. We cannot keep up. Our wallets cannot keep up.

Yours faithfully, and a little hungrily,

The CommitteeThe TreasurerLars (in Recovery)

P.S. Could you put two of the jalapeño ones aside for the meeting. Same time as usual.

The economic impact

An independent* study of everyone who lives, trains, drinks or rides a scooter near Bonnie's.

2 of 41people in our study left with only what they came for. Both came for wine.

*We did the study ourselves. At Bonnie's. Over a charcuterie board.

Questions

Is this a real protest?

The grievance is real. Bonnie's isn't going anywhere, which is exactly the problem.

Why not just walk on the other side of the road?

We tried. The other side of the road is closer to the wine fridge than you'd think.

When are the meetings?

Our first meeting was at Bonnie's. So was the second. The third is also at Bonnie's. There's cheese.

Where do we protest?

Outside Bonnie's, on the main road at Long Beach, Ko Lanta. Bring a sign. You'll leave with a jalapeño and cheese grilled sandwich and a cold bottle of something. That's how it always goes.
